amanteigamento por soldadura
(buttering by welding, buttering)
A weld caused by one or more string or weave beads laid down on an unbroken surface to obtain properties different from those of the parent metal.

ângulo exterior do eléctrodo
(drag angle)
The angle between the electrode and the workpiece when backhand welding.

banho de fusão
(weld pool, molten pool, molten weld pool)
The localized volume of molten metal in a weld prior to its solidification as weld metal.

bolha (s.f.)
(blistering)
Bulge on the workpiece surface caused by the expansion of gas entrapped within a member and which expanded due to heating.

bordo de avanço
(leading edge)

The forward edge of the weld pool.

bordos queimados
(undercut)

A groove melted into the base metal adjacent to the weld toe or weld root and left unfilled by weld metal.

brasagem (s.f.)
brazing (B)
A group of welding processes in which a groove, fillet, lap, or flange joint is bonded using a nonferrous filler metal having a melting point above 840 °F (450 °C), but below that of the base metals. Filler metal is distributed in the joint by capillary attraction.

brasagem à chama
(torch brazing [TB])
Brazing process, in which bonding is produced by heating with a gas flame and by using a nonferrous filler metal having a melting point above 800 °F (427 °C), but below that of the base metal. The filler metal is distributed in the joint by capillarity.

brasagem fraca
(soldering)
A group of joining processes which produce coalescence of materials by heating them to a suitable temperature and by using a filler metal having a liquidus (liquidus) not exceeding 840 oF (450 oC) and below the solidus (solidus) of the base materials. The filler metal is distributed between the closely fitted surfaces of the joint by capillary attraction.

The distance from the joint root to the toe of the fillet weld.

chanfragem (s.f.)
(gouging, edge beveling [US], edge bevelling [UK])
The forming of a bevel (chanfro) or groove (garganta) by removing material mechanically or with an electric arc process such as plasma gouging or arc gouging.

chapeamento por soldadura
(surfacing, cladding)
The deposition of a filler metal on a metal surface to obtain desired properties or dimensions.

cobrejunta (s.f.)
(backing)
A material or device placed against the back side of the joint, or at both sides of a weld in electroslag (electroescória) and electrogas (electrogás) welding, to support and retain molten weld metal. The material may be partially fused or remain unfused during welding and may be either metal or nonmetal.

coeficiente de fusão
(melting coefficient)
Melting rate per unit current of an electrode or wire.

comprimento do arco
(arc length)
The distance from the end of the electrode (ponta do eléctrodo) to the point where the arc makes contact with the work surface.

concordância da junta
(weld toe)
The junction of the weld face and the base metal.

controlo radiográfico
(radiographic examination, inspection)
The use of X-rays or gamma rays for the non-destructive examination of metals.

construção soldada
(weldment)
An assembly whose component parts are joined by welding.

cordão balanceado
(weave bead, crescent-shaped bead)
A bead created by curved side-to-side motion of the welding torch or electrode holder while, at the same time, moving forward. This creates a wider bead.

cordão estreito
(stringer bead)
A type of weld bead made without appreciable weaving motion.

cordão/passe final, cordão/passe de vista
(final pass, cover pass, cap pass)
The last pass in a multipass welding.

cratera (s.f.)
(crater, crater pipe, crater hole)
In arc welding, a depression at the termination of a weld bead or in the molten weld pool and not eliminated before or during the deposition of subsequent weld passes.

cupão (s.m.), testemunho (s.m.)
(coupon plate)
A test piece made by adding plates to the end of a joint to give an extension of the weld for test purposes. This term is usually used in the shipbuilding industry.

desbordo (s.m.)
(overlap)

The protrusion of weld metal beyond the weld toe or weld root.

For equal leg fillet welds (cordões de lados iguais), the leg lengths of the largest right isosceles triangle which can be inscribed within the fillet weld cross section. For unequal leg fillet welds, the leg lengths of the largest right triangle that can be inscribed within the fillet weld cross section.

eléctrodo de soldadura
(welding rod)
Filler metal in wire or rod form, used in gas welding and brazing processes and in those arc welding processes in which the electrode does not provide the filler metal.

eléctrodo nu
(bare electrode)
A filler metal electrode consisting of a single metal or alloy in the form of a wire, strip, or bar that has had no coating or covering applied to it other than that which was incidental to its manufacture or preservation.

eléctrodo revestido
(coated electrode, covered electrode)
A composite filler metal electrode consisting of a core (alma) of a bare electrode or metal cored electrode (eléctrodo com alma) to which a covering sufficient to provide a slag layer on the weld metal has been applied. The covering may contain materials providing such functions as shielding from the atmosphere, deoxidation, and arc stabilization and can serve as a source of metallic additions to the weld. Flux is applied externally by dipping, spraying, painting, or similar methods.

The condition of weld metal welded joints, and welded assemblies (weldments, US) after welding but prior to any subsequent thermal, mechanical, or chemical treatments.

A destructive method of inspection, where a lap joint is mechanically separated by peeling.

ensaio de textura, ensaio de compacidade
(nick break test)
A method for testing the soundness of welds by nicking each end of the weld, then giving the test specimen a sharp hammer blow to break the weld from nick to nick. Visual inspection will show any weld defects.

eléctrodo de tungsténio
(tungsten electrode)
A non-filler metal electrode used in arc welding or cutting made principally of tungsten.

The distance from the beginning of the joint root perpendicular to the hypotenuse of the largest right triangle that can be inscribed within the cross section of a fillet weld. This dimension is based on the assumption that the root opening is equal to zero.

the shortest distance between the weld root and the face of a fillet weld.

(c) espessura efectiva
(effective throat)
The minimum distance minus any convexity between the weld root and the face of a fillet weld.

(concavity, actual throat thickness)
The maximum distance from the face of a concave fillet weld perpendicular to a line joining the weld toes (concordâncias da junta).

Equipment to keep SMAW electrodes under ideal conditions to avoid moisture absorption or other contamination.

The exposed surface of a weld on the side from which welding was done.

fissura sob cordão
(underbead crack)
A crack in the heat-affected zone generally not extending to the surface of the base metal.

flambagem (s.f.)
(buckling)
Distortion of the work piece caused by the heat of a welding process.

fluxo (s.m.)
(flux)
A chemical compound or mixture in powdered, paste or liquid form. Its essential function is to combine with or otherwise render harmless those products of the welding operation which would reduce the physical properties of the deposited metal, or make welding difficult or impossible.

The separation at the joint root between the workpieces.

fotoqueratite (s.f.), fotoqueratoconjuntivite (s.f.)
(arc eye [UK], eye flash, flash burn [US])
Irritation of the eye caused by exposure to radiation from an electric arc.

(slag inclusion)
Non-metallic solid material entrapped in weld metal or between weld metal and base metal.

inclusão vermicular
(worm hole)
An elongated or tubular cavity formed by entrapped gas during the solidification of molten metal.

inspecção visual da soldadura
(bead reading, visual inspection)

The process of visually inspecting the weld bead to determine whether the weld was made properly.

junta (s.f.), preparação (s.f.)
(joint)
Shape of the groove, or groove between both elements to be welded.

junta de topo
(butt joint)

A joint between two members aligned approximately in the same plane.

Joint assembly in which the weld lies at an angle to the axis of the parts to be joined.

The removal of the surface or surfaces of blooms (pranchões), billets (lingotes) and slabs (pranchas) by means of a flame cutting machine.
